A leading Polish jazz pianist will join one of Hamilton’s newest jazz ensembles at a one-off concert in the city next month. Artur Dutkiewicz (www.arturdutkiewicz.pl) will perform with Banda de la Casa in the foyer of the Founders Theatre on April 7. Dutkiewicz will perform solo and with the band at the concert, being organised by Banda de la Casa guitarist and fellow-Pole Maciek Hrybowicz. Dutkiewicz is one of Poland’s greatest jazz pianists and has performed and competed around the world. He is a previous finalist in the Thelonious Monk Competition in the US and has also played at the Wellington International Jazz Festival, along with countless other jazz festivals worldwide. It will be his second visit to New Zealand – having toured last year with the Artur Dutkiewicz Trio – and he will mostly play works from his latest solo album of Chopin-inspired music, Mazurkas.

Maciek formed Banda De La Casa in 2015 with Uruguayan bassist Carlos Pla, both relatively new arrivals in Hamilton. Aside from a shared love of modern jazz styles, Maciek says they were both composing music inspired by the allure of Aotearoa. “The beauty of the New Zealand landscape is like an adrenaline shot and continually inspires me to write music,” he says. They are joined on stage by saxophonist Levon Denison, drummer Shannon Marsters and singer, saxophonist and percussionist Hinemoa. Maciek says playing with Dutkiewicz will be a highlight in the band’s relatively short history and will provide a real treat for the city’s jazz community. “Artur will play a solo first set then the band will play a set before he joins us on stage for the finale. We’re really looking forward to sharing the stage with such an internationally recognised and talented artist.”
